Practice Overview

Partner Cheryl Carpenter has practiced law in Southern Indiana and Kentucky for more than 35 years.  She is known as an accomplished trial lawyer and appellate advocate, a creative problem-solver, and a skilled negotiator.  Whether representing clients in a divorce or custody matter, helping a family in mediation, or serving as a guardian ad litem, Ms. Carpenter is focused on the long-term impact of families and how the family unit can be made stronger, even in difficult situations.

Ms. Carpenter’s practice is devoted principally to family law matters, including divorce, paternity, parenting time, child custody, and child support issues, and to probate matters.  She often represents executives, business owners, professionals, and others with large estates and complex assets in divorce and custody matters.

She is also a Family Law Mediator registered by the Indiana Supreme Court Commission for Continuing Legal Education, and is frequently appointed by the courts to advocate as a guardian ad litem for children in difficult cases.

How I Help Clients

I represent individuals and families going through difficult times.  I advocate on behalf of clients, help them prepare for and cope with the anxiety and emotion of their matter, and work hard in seeking creative solutions that will accomplish their objectives.  I am mindful that even after a divorce is final, family relationships and interaction will continue in some form if there are children involved.  It is important to minimize the damage to these relationships when possible.

I represent high net worth clients in their divorce by helping them value complex assets such as businesses, real estate, and pensions and retirement benefits so that a fair property allocation can be made.  I also work hard in seeking to obtain the custody and parenting time objectives that they desire.  As an experienced divorce lawyer, my first strategy is to use negotiation, mediation, and creative problem solving to develop an acceptable solution, but if an acceptable solution is not forthcoming, I will advocate tenaciously on behalf of my clients in court.

I believe a family lawyer plays an important role in the future dynamics of the family’s relationship.  I take this role seriously, not only in advocating for my client’s interests, but in assessing the long-term impact that the outcome will have on the family.
